THE DETAIL. CONNECTED.

Start with the questions that tend to come late.

Year-end pressure often comes from unresolved information, rather than the audit work itself. An unexplained balance, an undocumented agreement or a missing reconciliation can slow the conversation when everyone is already working to a deadline. A preparation discussion gives the finance team an opportunity to identify these matters earlier.

Give the balance sheet an owner.

Assign responsibility for the key schedules behind each material balance. A schedule should explain what is included, how it agrees to the ledger and where the supporting records can be found. The same principle applies to bank balances, receivables, payables, inventory and fixed assets, although the information required will differ.

Make significant changes visible.

A new financing arrangement, a major contract, a change in operations or an unusual transaction may need particular attention. Keep a record of these developments and discuss them during planning. Good documentation explains both what happened and how it was reflected in the accounts.

Agree the sequence of the work.

Ask what information is needed first, who will coordinate responses and how open questions will be tracked. An agreed timetable works best when it reflects the readiness of the records and the availability of the people involved. The objective is an orderly exchange of information, with fewer surprises for everyone.

The Cressford perspective

Audit readiness is a management habit as much as a year-end task. Consistent reconciliations and clear records throughout the year create a stronger starting point for the formal engagement.
