THE DETAIL. CONNECTED.

Separate performance from timing.

A business can record a profitable period and still face pressure on its bank balance. Customers may pay later than expected, stock may absorb cash before it is sold and expenses may fall due before the related income is collected. A useful finance discussion looks at profitability and the timing of receipts and payments together.

Build a forecast around real movements.

Start with the cash available, then map expected collections, supplier payments, payroll and other commitments over a period that suits the business. Make the assumptions visible. A forecast becomes more useful when the team can distinguish confirmed movements from estimates and identify who can update each assumption.

Use scenarios to frame choices.

What would happen if a large customer paid later? What if a planned purchase moved forward? Scenarios do not predict the future; they help management understand the effect of a change. Keep the alternatives focused on decisions that the business can influence, rather than generating detail that nobody will use.

Create a regular review rhythm.

Compare the forecast with actual movements and discuss the differences. The process can reveal recurring collection issues, optimistic assumptions or costs that need better planning. Over time, the conversation should become more informed because the team learns where the estimates need attention.

The Cressford perspective

A cash forecast is a working conversation. Its value comes from updating it, challenging the assumptions and using the information to make decisions at the right time.
